Can You Drive After Laughing Gas?

March 3, 2022

Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) is a very common type of sedation used for dental procedures. Usually, when people think about sedation dentistry, they may think of more extensive forms which will put you to sleep and make you groggy for a few days.

But this is not the case with laughing gas. In fact, the effects wear off so quickly, that you will not feel any of the effects just minutes after the procedure has been completed. And yes, you’ll even be able to drive yourself home!

If you’re interested in finding out more about laughing gas, check out this short post created by Vivid Smiles!

How Does Laughing Gas Work?

The nitrous oxide is combined with oxygen in a tank. The patients will receive the gas by having a mask placed on their nose, and inhaling the gas directly into their system. You will begin to feel the effects almost immediately, as the gas will make you more relaxed, calm, maybe a bit disoriented.

Then, the dentist begins the procedure, and when it’s finished they will swap the laughing gas with pure oxygen to help any remaining gas exit your system. In about 5 minutes, all traces of the gas should be gone, and you will feel exactly as you did when you arrived at the dentist’s office.

Unlike other forms of sedation, laughing gas does not affect your motor skills, abilities to make decisions, or even your ability to drive! So there is no need to have a friend drive you home after the appointment.

Side Effects of Laughing Gas

Some patients can experience some side effects to laughing gas, but they usually only last while the gas is still in their system:

  • Confusion
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Headaches

It’s also possible for headaches and nausea to persist even after the gas has exited your system, but it will likely not last more than a day.

Is Laughing Gas Only for Serious Dental Procedures?

No. This is a common myth many people have about sedation dentistry. In reality, sedation like laughing gas can be useful even during simple procedures like dental cleanings, especially if the patient is dealing with high levels of dental anxiety, or has a disability that prevents them from staying still in the dentist chair for too long.

Sedation is designed to help people feel relaxed and comfortable at the dentist, so that fear can no longer keep them away from getting their dental needs addressed.
